A project of Orange Room Studios, Foriegn Language Music is a blog designed for the organized learning of foreign language and culture through the lyrics and any available audio-video material of world music.

I endeavor to provide original, but often direct and not necessarily artistic English translations of the lyrics from as many languages, countries, and musical genres as possible, as well as cultural and grammatical notes.  My hope is that the students use the translations and explanations to facilitate their appreciation of the original, foreign language as much as possible.

The secondary purpose of this website is to provide a model for the incorporation of authentic foreign language material into a learning module.  For organizational purposes, I have made a simple search database (flm-database-08-june-2011-1) which will be updated regularly.

I am currently working with approximately 51 languages:

Afro-Astiatic (Modern Standard Arabic, Hebrew)
Altaic (Turkish, Mongolian)
Amerindian (Aymara, Quechua)
Austro-Asiatic (Khmer/Cambodian, Vietnamese)
Austronesian (Malay, Indonesian, Tagalog/Filipino, Hawaiian)
Indo-European:
Romance (Latin, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Catalan, Romanian)
Balto-Slavic (Lithuanian, Russian, Bulgarian, Polish, Czech, Serbo-Croatian)
Germanic (German, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic)
Indo-Aryan (Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, Nepali, Farsi/Persian)
Greek (Modern Greek)
Celtic (Irish)
Niger-Congo (Swahili)
Sino-Tibetan (Tibetan, Burmese, Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese)
Tai-Kai (Thai, Lao)
Uralic (Finnish, Hungarian)
Other (Japanese, Ainu, Korean)
